2022 HHS Distinguished Alumni Award Winner Announced
Every year, Holden R-III School District honors a past graduate who exemplifies the values, traditions, and successes of Holden High School by naming a Distinguished Alumni. Recipients of this award have shown dedication to and excellence in their chosen field. This year’s Distinguished Alumni is Sergeant Christian Butler, a 2001 Holden High School graduate.
During his time at Holden High School, Christian participated in track, football, and band, including the marching band.
Sgt. Butler found his path and passion shortly after high school and has been a certified police officer for nearly 20 years, graduating from the Blue Valley Police Academy in 2003. Sgt. Butler currently serves as the Director of the Sheriff’s Academy for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and is a civilian instructor at Fort Leonard Wood, a military installation in the Missouri Ozarks.
“We are so blessed that Christian Butler chose to move to our community. His success rate for the solving of cases has been the highest we have ever had for child crimes and homicides,” wrote Chief Deputy Linda Burgess in 2019. “Detective Butler has received three Merit Awards for his detailed work involving some very elaborate criminal cases.” Sgt. Butler serves as a mentor to many at his department, sharing his skills on how to most effectively talk with perpetrators and handle difficult cases.
As a law enforcement officer, Sgt. Butler has participated in many philanthropic endeavors, always seeking out ways to help. He has acted as a volunteer auctioneer at various charity auctions, including for CASA of South Central MO. The CASA auction funds their work to recruit, screen, train and support community members to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children within the 25th Judicial Circuit. Sgt. Butler also enjoys giving his time to attend Special Olympic competitions, handing out medals to athletes at the awards stand.
Noted by his niece, Callie Blaylock, for being selfless, his actions have saved lives and provided closure for many families. “Without a second thought, Christian jumped in rushing waters to save a drowning man”, earning him the Sheriff’s Life Saving Award. Callie goes on to say, “One of his favorite things to do is participate in ‘Shop with a Cop’ every Christmas, making sure underprivileged children have a chance to have a wonderful Christmas”.
While we know his schedule stays busy, Sgt. Butler finds time to relax with his wife, Maria, and children. He enjoys occasionally visiting Maria’s special education classroom to talk with students, and uses his musical talents as drummer in his church’s Praise Band.
Sergeant Christian Butler will be recognized as Holden High School Distinguished Alumni 2022 and will address the graduating class at the graduation ceremony on May 22, 2022 at Holden High School at 2:00pm.
