SB 63
A new Missouri law (Senate Bill 63, passed during the 2025 legislative session) opens the door for nontraditional students—those who are homeschooled, enrolled in Family Paced Education (FPE), or attending a full-time virtual program—to participate in public school extracurricular and co-curricular activities.
That means students who live within Holden R-3 School District boundaries, but aren't enrolled full-time in our schools, may now be eligible to try out for school-sponsored sports teams, clubs, and other student activities.
What You Need to Know
-
Students must live within the Holden R-3 attendance area. Find the boundaries here.
-
Extracurriculars (like sports and clubs): Students may try out and participate if they meet any necessary qualifications.
-
Co-curriculars (like Band, Choir, Theatre, FFA, and Speech & Debate): These typically have related courses during the school day that a student would be required to attend in order to participate.
-
All participants, regardless of enrollment status, must meet the same expectations as full-time students:
-
Academic eligibility
-
Good citizenship and conduct
-
Up-to-date physicals (for sports)
-
Participation fees, where applicable
-
Adherence to the Student Code of Conduct
-
Inclusion in our random student drug testing program (for all activities)
-
Please note: Students may not participate in both Holden R-3 and homeschool association activities at the same time. Also, if a student was enrolled in our district and later transfers to a homeschool setting, they must have been eligible at the time of withdrawal to continue participating.
We encourage interested families to review the full text of Senate Bill 63 for additional details.
