Holden R-3 Applies for Tire Scrap Grant

Holden R-III is exploring an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful improvement for some of our youngest learners. The district has applied for a grant through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources that would provide recycled tire material to create a safer, more durable surface for the Early Childhood/Eagles Nest playground.

Safe, engaging play spaces are an important part of early learning. This project would not only enhance the playground experience for our preschool students, but also ensure the space remains well-maintained for years to come—all while using recycled materials in a responsible way.

The grant program is funded through Missouri’s scrap tire fee, which supports projects that turn used tires into useful products, like playground surfacing. It’s a practical example of how recycling can directly benefit local communities.

If awarded, this project will also extend into the classroom. Students at Holden Elementary will take part in a project-based learning unit, Earth Superhero: Recycling Edition, where they’ll explore how recycling helps protect our planet. By connecting their learning to a real improvement on their own playground, students will see firsthand how small actions can make a big difference.

This opportunity reflects the district’s continued commitment to seeking creative solutions that support student safety, learning, and long-term sustainability.
