Every year, Holden R-3 School District honors a past graduate who exemplifies the values, traditions, and successes of Holden High School by naming a Distinguished Alumni. Recipients of this award have shown dedication to and excellence in their chosen field. This year’s Distinguished Alumni is Dr. James L. Young, Jr., 1993 Holden High School graduate. Dr. Young has built a remarkable career in military service, historical scholarship, and published authorship.

While a student at Holden High School, Dr. Young was an active and well-rounded Eagle, involved in a wide range of activities including Future Teachers of America, Eagle Publications, Band, National Honor Society, Drama Club, Academic Bowl, Football, Basketball, and Track & Field.

After graduating from Holden High School, Dr. Young earned admission to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point—an honor achieved by fewer than 12% of applicants each year. There, he completed a degree in military history with a systems engineering track. He went on to serve six years in the U.S. Army before pursuing graduate studies at Kansas State University, where he earned both a master’s and a doctorate in U.S. History.

Today, Dr. Young is a published author whose work focuses on military training and realistic historical fiction. His writing has been featured in the Journal of Military History and Proceedings and has been recognized by the United States Naval Institute and the Adams Cold War Essay Contest. His writings are used in professional training by the U.S., U.K., and Israeli militaries.

Though Dr. Young is unable to attend the Class of 2025 Commencement Ceremony due to prior commitments, he has shared remarks through a video message, which will be played for the crowd at graduation on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Holden R-3 proudly recognizes Dr. James L. Young, Jr. for his contributions to the military, historical scholarship, and literature—making him a truly Distinguished Alumni.
