  • Parents did you know?

Parents as Teachers is a partnership between the family and home, the Holden R-III School District, and the community to give all children the best possible start in life. Parents are their child's first and most influential teachers. Scientists have proven that experiences in the earliest years make a physical difference in the structure of a child's brain. Your child's growth and development during the first few years of life will be the foundation for success in learning.
The Parents as Teachers program offers four important components of support for families:

    Personal Visits

    Preschool Activity Nights

    Screenings

    Resource Network

    Who is our Parent Educator?

Vicky Birkle is our parent educator with a degree in psychology and special education.  She is certified by Parents as Teachers (PAT) as a parent educator.  Vicky is the mother of two children.  She has been a teacher for 12 years with elementary students in the Holden School District.  Prior to working as a teacher in the Holden School district she had 12 years of experience working with children as a paraprofessional, preschool teacher, Therapeutic Preschool Teacher and case manager for preschoolers-teenagers.  As a parent educator, Vicky will visit families and engage the parents and children in activities, provide information about child development,  discuss parenting issues and concerns with the family, and help with school readiness.

Why do I need a Parent Educator?

Research has shown that children whose parents were involved in PAT...
      •  Were better prepared for kindergarten in the areas of language, social development, problem solving and intellectual abilities.
      • Scored higher on standardized measures of reading and math achievement than did comparison children.

When does the Parent Educator visit?

Visits are scheduled during the school year. Frequency of visits is based on individual family needs. Generally, visits will be scheduled from 3:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and then some Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Your parent educator will discuss convenient appointment times to meet with you and your child.
